Because of the authoritarian image,
individuals under supervision sometimes surround the Probation Officer
with a “professional stigma” which creates a barrier hampering rapport,
development of friendship and guidance in certain areas. THE VOLUNTEER........IS
NOT STIGMATIZED BY THE PROFESSIONAL IMAGE OR LOOKED UPON AS A FIGURE OF
AUTHORITY. The very nature of the Probation Officer’s position requires
a certain amount of aloofness in order to retain necessary controls and
socializing with probationers could create jealousies and obscure objectivity.
THE VOLUNTEER....... CAN BE A FRIEND AND THE NATURE OF HIS VOLUNTARY SERVICE
IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE IMAGE OF CONCERN AND GENUINE INTEREST. |
